The Port Isabel, Texas, Rotary Club, in conjunction with Rotary District 5930, is once again sponsoring work crews to Trujillo, Honduras.

In 2007, Rotarians and others built a new three classroom school in the Community of the Tigers, a new two classroom school in 18 de Abril, two additional classrooms in Remolino, and renovated a school in Trujillo.

In 2008, volunteers and villagers, built two new classrooms at a school in Silin, two new classrooms at a school in Buenos Aires, a new kindergarten in the Pech Indian village, a new school in the Cunda community, and a new kindergarten in 13 de Junio.

Through a Rotary Foundation matching grant we also provided power to the school and village of 18 de Abril, provided water for the 750 households in Barrio Cristales, provided 153 computers for schools along the Honduran north coast and science equipment for 9 schools in Trujillo, and built new latrines at 3 schools.

The total budget for February, 2008, was $90.619.94.

In 2009, we hope to build 9 classrooms at 4 schools, provide power to four communities, provide water to a community of 11,000 people, build latrines at 3 schools, and provide schools with 150 computers.

The 2009 budget is just over $124,516.00.

Giving to the Hands to Honduras program is easy.  Tax deductible donations may be made through the McAllen North Rotary Scholarship Fund and sent c/o Tom Plumb, P.O. Box K, Port Isabel, Texas 78578.  Other donations may be sent to the Hands to Honduras, Inc. at the same address.  Mark checks for Honduras.  All funds will be applied to Hands to Honduras projects.  This is an excellent way to accomplish International Service goals for the year 2008-2009.  For project costs see the latest news below.

Larger donations for full or large parts of projects are being sought.  Such contributions will be recognized with plaques on the facilities being built.  Public recognition will also be given in press releases.

Rotary volunteers, spouses and friends, Interact and Rotaract members, and members of the community-at-large are welcome to join the three teams that will be going to Trujillo, Honduras, for 9 or 17 day trips.  We are sponsored by the Trujillo Rotary Club.

2009 work crews will be:

  February 4-12, 2009

February 4-15, 2009

February 12-21, 2009

February 21-March 6, 2009

(portion thereof)

No skill is necessary and there is something for everyone to do.  Those with electrical and plumbing skills are encouraged to sign up.  These teams will be assigned to various tasks ranging from masonry (training provided on first day under supervision of local mason), painting, building and repairing schools.  Transportation, lodging, and meals are paid by each volunteer and range from $1,100.00 to $1,500.00 depending on volunteer choices (details in update below).  The program leaders will attempt to obtain the most favorable rates for all possible expense categories.  We will be staying at the Christopher Columbus Beach Resort that cost $54.00 tax included per night per room (up to 4 people per room) last year (two double beds, ocean view, 2 pools, oceanfront).
